The Chetwynde Hotel - Cumbria, England
My family and I have just returned from a wonderful holiday in the Lake District. We stayed at The Chetwynde Hotel, Abbey Road, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. The hotel is situated on the west coast and very close to main roads and for getting around the Lake District.
It was a nightmare trying to find wheelchair accessible hotels and when I found this hotel I was really worried that it would be unsuitable. Gladly that was not the case.
The hotel is fully wheelchair accessible. They have a portable ramp into the hotel and this was left up the whole week we were there.
The wheelchair accessible room is quite big but this would depend on the size of your wheelchair. Mine is a standard size. My sister was with me as I could not have managed on my own. Bed, mattress, etc were very comfortable and spotless.
The bathroom is a reasonable size and I could manoeuvre around it ok. The wet room shower was a problem for me as there was only one bar to hold on to, and the flooring was not non slip. I believe the hotel management are rectifying this as they are so willing to help and receive useful advice. There are two sinks in the bathroom and one is lower for a wheelchair user. This was excellent.
The food was delicious, plentiful, well presented and served in abundance. The variety at breakfast was amazing and the portions served were huge. We quickly worked out how to make the portions smaller. The dining room and bar and lounge area is excellent with no problem in moving around.
My family and I have no hesitation in recommending the Chetwynde Hotel to other wheelchair users. As we all have differing mobility and disability needs, checking with the hotel on specific needs will always have to be carried out. For me as an electric wheelchair user, this hotel was excellent and I managed very well.
Our Bench Cottages - Hampshire, England
We have holidayed at “Our Bench” Self Catering cottages in the New Forest a number of times and want to recommend their facilities to others. Access to all three cottages is fully accessible, parking is available and the hosts are able to provide specialist equipment to make your stay easier – mobile hoists, a wheel in shower chair, an overbed table are just some of the examples – they are also able to put you in touch with a scooter hire for your holiday and a care agency who can come and help on a daily basis.
The bedrooms have electric head and foot riser beds, and their new “Garden Bench” property has a height adjustable profiling bed too – and in the evening it is great to sit by the fire on a riser recliner chair with free Wifi!
It is self catering – the kitchen has everything you need with space under the sink and cooker to make it easier for access, and they are happy to accept your supermarket shop on arrival day (just order online before you arrive) and the hosts will put it away for you.
Based in the New Forest – there is lots of accessible areas to explore from tarmac walks along the Solent, gravel tracks in the New Forest, museums, restaurants and tea rooms – the hosts provide lots of visitors guides in each cottage along with additional accessible information too. We would definitely recommend it.
